John W. Campbell is best known as the editor of Astounding Science Fiction
(aka Analog) for 34 years. There he developed an amazing group of writers
(Heinlein, van Vogt, Asimov, an several others). But he also wrote some
good stories himself.

Under his own name he wrote above average space opera. But under the name
of Don A. Stuart, he wrote stories that read quite well today. Probably
his most famous story was "Who Goes There?". It was filmed (twice), but
I still prefer his version. As usual, an excellent place to start is the
Del Rey book "The Best of John W. Campbell".
